A coaching party, as the title has it, was a group of riders and passengers traveling together in a horse-drawn coach, a pastime that drew wealthy Americans and Europeans in the decades around 1900. The four-in-hand coach, with its team of horses and a driver handling the reins from a raised seat, made for a showy day out, and such outings were often staged for the camera. The George Grantham Bain Collection gathered pictures like this for newspapers and magazines, but the title comes from caption cards whose accuracy has not been verified, so the exact occasion and the people involved remain uncertain.
