The caption identifies the subject as Champ Clark, the Missouri Democrat James Beauchamp Clark, who served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1911 to 1919 and sought his party's presidential nomination in 1912. The title comes from caption information supplied by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified. The Bain agency, a New York business that sold news photographs to newspapers, made many portraits of political figures in this period, and its glass negatives are valued for documenting Washington personalities of the early twentieth century.
