Champ Clark, the Missouri congressman who served as Speaker of the House from 1911 to 1919, is the figure named in this glass negative. Clark was a prominent Democrat and a long-serving member of Congress, and he twice sought his party's presidential nomination, in 1912 and 1920. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date for the exposure, so the image is best read as a portrait of a leading political figure from the Progressive Era rather than a record of a specific event.
