The name Pearl Aufrere on this glass negative comes from caption data the Bain News Service recorded on the plate or its card, and the Library of Congress notes that the title has not been verified. Bain, a New York photo agency founded around 1899, supplied pictures of stage performers, public figures and news events to newspapers, so a portrait from its files usually reflects the theatrical and press culture of the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the small 5 x 7 inch glass plate itself is the main physical clue to when and how the picture was made.
