The only identification for this glass negative is the name Emory Buckner, taken from the negative or its caption card, and the Library of Congress notes that the attribution has not been verified. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, made and distributed pictures of politicians, business leaders, and other newsworthy people for newspapers in the early twentieth century. George Grantham Bain's collection of its glass negatives preserves thousands of such portraits and news pictures. Because the record gives no date, the exact occasion of the portrait is unknown, but the glass plate format points to the agency's working years.
