This glass negative is titled "Col. Andrews," but the title comes from caption cards and data that the Library of Congress has not verified, so the sitter's identity and rank remain uncertain. The Bain News Service, founded in New York by George Grantham Bain around 1899, supplied news photographs to newspapers, and its glass plates from the early twentieth century document a wide range of public figures, events and places. Glass negatives of this size were the standard working format for press photographers of that period, before roll film became common. Researchers should treat the name as a lead to check against newspaper sources rather than as settled fact.
