The name Col. M. Delano comes from caption cards the Bain News Service attached to its negatives, and the record marks it as unverified, so the sitter's identity should be read with some caution. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of news photographs made in New York in the early twentieth century, when agency pictures were becoming a routine part of newspaper work. Its glass negative, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, reflects the working format of that era, which gave press photographers sharp detail for portraits of public figures.
