The sitter is recorded as Patrick F. Gill, a name taken from caption cards and negative sleeves that the Bain News Service wrote down without independent verification, so it should be treated as provisional. The glass plate, no larger than 5 by 7 inches, reflects the working format of the New York agency, which supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Bain's archive of tens of thousands of negatives documents the city's streets, public figures, and events of that period, and the caption information on individual plates is often the only record of who appears in them.
