Emmeline Pankhurst is the named subject here, the English suffragette who led the militant Women's Social and Political Union from 1903 and became one of the most recognizable faces of the campaign for women's right to vote. This glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers from the early 1900s onward. Its record gives no firm date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Pankhurst's visits to the United States in 1909 and 1913 drew large crowds and press attention, which is the kind of coverage such a negative would have served.
