Caption data identifies the sitter as Mrs. Karl G. Roebling, a member of the Roebling family of Trenton, New Jersey, whose firm, John A. Roebling's Sons Company, made wire rope and supplied the steel cables for the Brooklyn Bridge. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, produced this glass negative, and its society portraits of this kind were often used for newspaper features. The record gives no date, so the exact year remains unknown, but the glass-plate format places it in the era of Bain's commercial work, roughly the 1900s to the 1920s.
