This portrait of Mrs. Owen Johnson survives as a glass negative, a format the Bain News Service used heavily for the press photographs it sold to American newspapers in the early twentieth century. The sitter's name comes from the caption cards and the agency's notes, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified, so the identification should be treated as provisional. Owen Johnson was a New York novelist and writer of the period, and society and literary portraits like this one were common in the agency's files. Bain's negatives are valued today as a record of the faces and fashions of the era that newspapers chose to publish.
