This color poster promotes the December 1896 number of *Lippincott's Monthly Magazine*, a literary periodical issued by the J.B. Lippincott Company of Philadelphia. The record attributes the design to J.J. Gould, though that attribution comes from an older caption card and has not been independently verified. The 1890s were the high point of color lithographic posters, when publishers used bold graphics to sell periodicals on newsstands and in shop windows. Lippincott's, founded in 1868, was among the many general-interest monthlies of the period that competed for readers with fiction, essays and illustrations.
