This color poster advertises the December 1894 issue of *Lippincott's Monthly Magazine*, a Philadelphia literary periodical published by J.B. Lippincott & Co. It was designed by William L. Carqueville, a young artist who later worked in Chicago, and printed there by the Shoeber & Carqueville Lithographing Company. Its ambition reflects the 1890s boom in color lithographic posters, when publishers used bold, decorative images to catch the eye of readers in shops, stations, and streets. The record's details are older and not fully verified, but the piece still shows how magazines marketed themselves to a growing reading public.
