This color poster advertises the February issue of *Lippincott's*, the Philadelphia monthly published by J.B. Lippincott Company. Magazine publishers in the 1890s often commissioned large lithographed posters to catch the eye of passersby on city streets and in shop windows, and this one dates from 1896 in that tradition. The record credits J.J. Gould, Jr., as the designer, but that attribution comes from an old caption card and has not been verified. *Lippincott's* had long published fiction, essays and poetry, and its literary reputation is the context that gives this advertisement its meaning.
