Few 1890s posters announce a single month's issue as plainly as this one, which promotes the April 1895 number of *Lippincott's Monthly Magazine*. The Philadelphia publisher J.B. Lippincott & Company had issued the magazine since 1868, offering fiction and essays to a broad American readership. William L. Carqueville's color design belongs to the wave of illustrated magazine posters that filled American streets during the decade, when publishers competed for attention with bold lithographic art. The date rests on an old caption card, so the details are best treated as provisional.
