A summer leisure theme sets this 1895 color poster apart from the other magazine advertisements on the board. It promotes the August number of *Lippincott's Monthly Magazine*, and its caption card lists tobacco and tennis as subjects. The magazine was a Philadelphia literary monthly published by J. B. Lippincott & Company, and posters like this one were displayed to draw readers to a new issue. The designer, William L. Carqueville (1871-1946), worked in the commercial poster trade of the 1890s, when bold color lithography was a popular way to advertise periodicals.
