Unlike most images of a single building, this ink drawing shows two Cincinnati theaters on one sheet: the Olympic on East Seventh Street near Walnut, and the Empress on Vine Street near West Ninth. Its 1927 date places it in the years when downtown theaters were expanding to show motion pictures alongside live vaudeville and stage acts. Drawings like this one, held by the Library of Congress, record the planning side of that boom, when the placement, form, and street frontage of a playhouse mattered as much as its interior. Look closely at how the two facades and their surroundings are set out side by side, since the comparison reflects how theater design was being standardized in the period.
