*Resignation* is a mid-century American lithograph of a shepherd, his sheep, and his dog, set in a pastoral scene that reads as quiet and contemplative. The print reproduces a painting by Richard Westall, an English Royal Academician known for genteel, sentimental subjects, and was drawn on stone by D. Fabronius. Its publication in New York by D. & J. McLellan around 1859 shows how European painted compositions were widely copied by lithography and sold to American households at modest prices. Its catalog number, 392, suggests it belonged to a larger series of such prints.
