This lithograph takes its title, *Resignation*, and its composition from a painting by Richard Westall, a British painter elected to the Royal Academy, and it presents a quiet pastoral scene of a shepherd, his sheep, and a dog. The print was drawn on stone by D. Fabronius and published in New York by D. & J. McLellan around 1859. Prints like this one, which reproduced sentimental European paintings, were popular in American parlors at mid-century, when a mood of gentle rural contentment appealed to many buyers. The fact that the picture was made by copying an earlier painting, rather than drawn from life, is worth keeping in mind when reading its idealized landscape.
