Four men named in the record, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, William Harris Crawford, and the elder John Adams, appear in this 1824 etching by David Claypool Johnston, a Boston caricaturist who signed some plates with the name "Crackfardi." The race imagery fits the 1824 presidential contest, a crowded field in which no candidate won an electoral majority, so the choice passed to the House of Representatives. The notes suggest the print appeared late in the campaign, probably in October, when political caricatures were used to sway voters.
