Where many automobile pictures show cars on the road, this 1916 etching focuses on a building called The auto school, a place where people went to learn to drive. Driving instruction grew alongside the car itself in the 1910s, when motoring was shifting from a wealthy hobby to an everyday skill. Printmakers of that decade often turned to the streets and new commercial buildings of growing cities for subjects. The plate bears a monogram and the date, and the print is also signed in pencil below the image, details worth noting for anyone studying how artists of the period marked their work.
