Star of Shetland appears here under full sail, and the record's J-series number points to a copyright deposit, a process that sent photographs to the U.S. Copyright Office and helped preserve many images like it. The date of about October 22, 1926 comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified. By the mid-1920s, steamships had taken over most cargo routes, so a photograph of canvas filling overhead captures a working trade that was already in decline. Images like this one are useful to historians of maritime life and to anyone curious about how sailing ships looked at work.
