Ice sailing, as this glass negative is titled, shows wind-driven craft skimming across frozen water, a winter pastime far removed from the open channels where steamboats worked. The title comes from notes the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card, and those details have not been independently verified, so the exact place and date remain uncertain. George Grantham Bain ran a New York news photography service in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives now form a large part of the Library of Congress collection. Ice boating was a popular winter recreation on frozen lakes and rivers in the northern United States.
