Joshua Reed Giddings, the Ohio congressman who served in the House of Representatives for two decades, sits for this half-length portrait, turned slightly toward the right. The image is a sixth-plate daguerreotype, a small, mirror-bright picture on silvered copper that has been gold toned to soften its highlights and deepen its shadows, and it carries the studio attribution of Mathew Brady, whose New York gallery drew many of the period's public figures. The record describes it as a copy, transferred in 1920 from holdings at the U.S. War College, so it preserves a likeness made during the years Giddings was a prominent antislavery voice in Congress.
