Cartoonist W.A. Rogers drew this lithograph for the New York Herald, and the U.S. Navy Publicity Bureau reprinted it as a recruiting poster. Its imagery is blunt: a German soldier stands beside a skull and crossbones and a pair of daggers, a menace the Navy is shown as the only force able to hold back. The poster dates from 1917, when Germany had resumed unrestricted submarine warfare and the United States was preparing to enter the First World War. Its catalog subjects also mention communications, pointing to the Atlantic shipping lanes and the links between America and Europe that the Navy was charged with protecting.
