The street runs beneath the Gros-Horloge, the medieval belfry in Rouen whose clock tower spans the roadway. Thomas Shotter Boys, an English artist who traveled in France drawing old towns and buildings, made this 1839 lithograph. It was issued as a plate in his illustrated volume on picturesque architecture, which reflected the period's taste for views of narrow, historic streets. The print shows how the tower closes off the lane and frames the passage, a sense of an older city that was already drawing admirers in the 1830s.
