A calendar for 1898 built around a portrait of Phillips Brooks (1835-1893), the Boston clergyman whose sermons and hymns made him one of the best-known churchmen of his day. Brooks was rector of Trinity Church in Boston and was elected bishop of Massachusetts in 1891, two years before his death. Printed about 1897, the piece reproduces a photograph by halftone, a process that let publishers reproduce photographs cheaply in large runs. Calendars like this one, which kept a clergyman's face in homes and parishes through the year, were a common way to honor a figure after his death.
