Two yachts named in the title, *Valkyrie* and *Vigilant*, mark one of the most closely watched contests in American sporting history. In 1893 the British challenger *Valkyrie II*, sailed for Earl of Dunraven, came to New York to race for the America's Cup against the defender *Vigilant*, a Herreshoff-built cutter. *Vigilant* won both races that fall, keeping the Cup in American hands, and the series drew large crowds of spectators. The photograph is credited to J.S. Johnson of New York, and the date is approximate.
