Florida is not a state people usually associate with toboggan runs, which makes this c1892 view by Jacksonville photographer O. Pierre Havens an unusual one. The caption card also lists alligators, sleds, and African American children, and it tags the picture as caricature, which suggests a staged, comic scene. Tourist-oriented views of the post-Reconstruction South often reduced Black figures to stereotypes for white audiences, so this image is worth reading as evidence of those attitudes as much as of winter-season amusement. The record's details come from the original caption card and have not been independently verified.
