A shop window on Fifth Avenue in New York City serves as the mirror here, catching the street behind the photographer and folding it into the glass. The picture was made in 1950, a period when Fifth Avenue was among the city's busiest shopping and office corridors, and when storefront displays were carefully arranged to draw pedestrians in. Reflections of this kind let a single frame hold two layers at once: the goods on display and the moving crowd and buildings mirrored over them. The gelatin silver print preserves the tonal range that made such street scenes so vivid to mid-century viewers.
