Round Top, the wooded hill south of the Gettysburg battlefield, is shown here from within the stone and earth breastworks its defenders raised there. Soldiers on the Union left built these barriers during the afternoon of July 2, 1863, when they struggled to hold the high ground against Confederate attacks that threatened the flank of the entire army. The view looks outward from behind the works, so the low walls and cleared ground show how the men fought from cover. Photographs like this one, made in the years after the battle, preserved the terrain as veterans and visitors came to see where the fighting had been fiercest.
