The "Tree of Life" title sets this chromolithograph apart from the other pictures on the Apples board, since its subject is a symbolic tree rather than fruit alone. The record credits G. Butters as artist and the Rev. J.A. Hammond as designer, a division of labor common in illustrated prints of the period, when a clergyman might supply the concept and a commercial lithographer the drawing. Chromolithography built color from a separate stone for each hue, which made it costly but popular in the 1880s and 1890s for bringing painted-looking color into homes, schools and churches. Looking closely shows how many layers of ink went into each tint.
