The title names a single tree, a mountain apple, rather than an orchard, and the print is credited to photographer William Barnhill. Photographs of individual fruit trees from around 1917 often treated the tree as a subject in its own right, with trunk, branches, and fruit set against open ground, which made them useful both as records of cultivation and as views of the countryside. The record does not say where the tree stood or who tended it, so the picture is best read as a study of one tree from a period when apple growing was a major part of American farming and fruit appeared often in printed views of rural life.
