Ulman's study shows a woman peeling an apple by hand, with the knife and fruit given as much attention as the figure. The "No. 1" in the title suggests she may have made more than one version of the scene. Ulman is best known for her portraits and domestic scenes from the southern Appalachian mountains in the 1920s and early 1930s, when outside observers were drawn to the region's traditional crafts and rural household work. Platinum printing, prized by pictorialist photographers for its soft tonal range, lends the image a quiet, handmade quality.
