A plain list of foods, one hot dish, meat, vegetables, a sandwich, fruit and milk, forms the message of this color silkscreen poster made under the Oklahoma arm of the Federal Art Project. Produced around 1941, when the Works Progress Administration employed artists across the country, it argued that a well-balanced school lunch could improve children's health and learning. Silkscreen was an economical method suited to printing multiple copies for schools and public spaces. Posters like this aimed to make good nutrition easy to grasp at a glance during the Depression years, when many families struggled to afford balanced meals.
