Wolthausen's Hilltop label is a crate label for Yakima Valley fruit, so it was printed to be pasted on a wooden box and seen by buyers in distant markets. Labels like this were part of how growers and packing houses built a brand name that shoppers could recognize on a store shelf. The Yakima Valley in central Washington grew into a major apple region after irrigation works opened its dry hillsides to orchards in the early 1900s, and rail shipping carried its fruit east. Look closely at the lithographed color and the lettering, which show how much effort went into selling fruit by its picture.
