Few things in the apple trade were as carefully designed as the crate label, and this one, printed for a grower sold under the Spinner Brand, shows how much effort went into selling fruit by its picture. Crate labels like this were pasted onto the ends of wooden shipping boxes so buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance. Bright chromolithographed scenes of orchards, fruit, and idealized rural life were common, and they helped turn an ordinary commodity into a brand. Notice how the lettering and imagery work together to promise quality before the crate is ever opened.
