Few towns in Illinois sit as strategically as Cairo, where the Ohio River meets the Mississippi at the state's southern tip, and this exhibition poster ties that place to a national program. It was produced under the Federal Art Project, the arm of the Works Progress Administration that employed artists during the Great Depression from 1935 to 1943. Posters from the project were often printed by silkscreen and used to announce community exhibitions, giving working artists paid labor and a public audience. Its lettering and layout reflect the modest means and bold graphic style of the period.
