Few theatrical posters of the 1890s carried a title as rustic as *Human Hearts, an Idyl of the Arkansaw Hills*, which advertised a touring production of Joseph Arthur's popular melodrama. The play, first staged in 1880, built its sentimental story around life in the hill country, a setting that audiences of the period found both picturesque and emotionally affecting. The sheet was produced by the U.S. Lithograph Co. for the Russell-Morgan Print firm, which operated in Cincinnati and New York, two cities that were major centers of American color lithography. Its bold colors and crowded layout were typical of traveling-show bills meant to catch the eye from across a street.
