Few amusement parks on Coney Island were as ornate as Dreamland, the Brooklyn resort whose towers and electric lighting made it a showpiece when it opened in 1904. This picture records the fire that destroyed it in 1911, with firefighters working among the smoke and wreckage. The photograph came from Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm known for its stereographs and news photography, and it was registered for copyright that year. Pictures like this one, which show the aftermath of a major public disaster, offer a useful record of how the fire and its response looked to the people who saw it.
