Men of the New York Fire Department stand in a formal line under the title "Honor men," a lineup that suggests a ceremony or inspection rather than a fire call. The picture is a glass negative from October 1908, made by the Bain News Service, a commercial agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early 1900s. Bain's photographers recorded city life, public events and emergency workers, so the image gives a sense of how the department presented itself during the years when horse-drawn apparatus was giving way to motorized equipment. The title comes from caption data the agency recorded, so the exact occasion remains uncertain.
