A night-time lighting tool rather than an engine, this searchlight is the focus of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, with the title reading "Fire Dept. searchlight, New York." Bain News Service, a New York photo agency active from the early 1900s, sold pictures to newspapers, and its captions were often written in haste, so the title comes from unverified notes and no date is recorded. Fire crews of that era relied on portable electric lights to see across collapsed walls, rooftops and smoke-filled streets during night calls, an improvement over lanterns and torches. The plate shows how the department added new equipment alongside its horse-drawn and motorized apparatus.
