The name on this glass negative is Dr. F.G. Cottrell, though the record notes that the title comes from unverified caption data kept by the Bain News Service. Frederick Gardner Cottrell was a physical chemist best known for the electrostatic precipitator, which he developed around 1907 to capture smoke and dust particles from industrial exhaust. Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency active in the early twentieth century, supplied newspapers with pictures of notable people and events, so a portrait of a scientist of this kind fits the agency's output of the period.
