Jack Norworth, the vaudeville performer and songwriter, is the subject of this small glass negative from the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose work makes up the George Grantham Bain Collection. Norworth is best remembered as the lyricist of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," published in 1908 with composer Albert Von Tilzer. The record gives no date for the negative and notes that the name comes from the agency's caption cards and has not been independently verified, so the portrait is best read as an example of the stage-celebrity photography that Bain's studio produced in the early twentieth century.
