Jack Barrymore, the stage and screen actor, is the subject named in this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, supplied pictures of theater and film people to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and the title comes from that agency's own caption cards, which the Library notes are unverified. The record gives no date, so the exact sitting is unknown. Barrymore was a prominent figure on Broadway and in silent films of that era, which makes a portrait from this collection a useful glimpse of how the agency documented celebrities.
