The sitter is recorded only as "Gen. Payot," a title taken from unverified notes the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives or caption cards, so the identification should be treated as provisional. The George Grantham Bain Collection grew out of a New York agency that supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of public figures, events and daily news in the early twentieth century. Its glass negatives record how press photographers worked at the time, and the caption information that traveled with them is often the best clue to a picture's original purpose.
