The only name attached to this glass negative is "Schipa," a title the Bain News Service recorded without verification, so it may refer to the Italian tenor Tito Schipa, who sang with the Metropolitan Opera in New York during the 1920s. Bain was a commercial photo agency that documented stage performers, politicians and public events for newspapers, and its glass negatives are a major visual record of early twentieth-century America. With no date recorded, the image is best understood through its period, when opera singers were major celebrities and portraits were often made for publicity.
