The name on this glass negative, Oscar Ammesinger, comes from caption information the Bain News Service recorded on the plate or its card. The Library of Congress notes that this title is unverified, so readers should treat the sitter's identity as provisional. George Grantham Bain began his news photo agency in New York around the turn of the twentieth century, supplying newspapers with portraits, events and street scenes. Glass plates of this modest size were a routine part of that work, and surviving examples show how press photographers operated before roll film became standard.
