This glass negative documents a streetcar labor dispute in Boston, though the record gives no date and its title comes from caption information the Bain News Service supplied and that has not been independently verified. The Bain agency photographed news events in American cities from about 1900 through the 1920s, when streetcar workers across the country often struck over wages, hours, and union recognition, and such stoppages could leave city streets full of idle cars and crowds. The small glass format was typical of the agency's working negatives, so the picture is best read as a record of a moment in that wider pattern of urban labor conflict.
