The record credits the picture to the sculptor Elie Nadelman, though that title comes from caption information the Bain News Service noted on the negative or its card and has not been independently verified. Nadelman, born in Warsaw in 1882, became known in New York for smooth, stylized sculptures of women, dancers and circus figures, and he was also a notable collector of American folk art. The Bain News Service was a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives capture the working press photography of that era. No date is recorded, so the image is best placed within the years the agency was active.
